Coils & Cables to the Rescue Capital Refractories Limited – Coils & Cables Division, has yet again risen to the occasion and assisted a foundry during a furnace failure. Archibald Young is a jobbing foundry based just outside of Glasgow, producing copper based, aluminium and iron alloy high quality castings. They contacted Coils & Cables when their furnace suddenly failed due to an earth fault caused by a water leak from their Raydyne coil, a standard job for Capital’s electrical engineering team. In order to minimize production downtime, a speedy response was essential. The coil assembly was sent down to the Coils & Cables site in West Bromich, and the team immediately set to work on it. The screed and castable were removed from the coil, which enabled Paul Cordelle at C&C to identify the damaged area – holes in the copper section due to metal penetration between the active coil turns. The holes were repaired with a silver/copper alloy, and coil turns were altered to ensure even turn spacing. As standard, the coil was pressure tested to 10 bar/140 psi, and left overnight. There was found to be no water leaks in the coil, and the flow rates were fine. The coil was then painted with an anti-tracking varnish and exposed areas were insulated with fibre glass tape impregnated with varnish. As per Archibald Young’s request, the broken fixing stud was removed and the locating hole was rethreaded in preparation for onsite installation. Coil screed was expertly applied inside and out to protect the coil from metal splash and debris, and the assembly was finally painted with grey anti tracking varnish in order to assist in identifying any possible future damage. Mindful of the setbacks that an out of action furnace can cause, the team at Coils & Cables took just 2 ½ days to work on the coil before returning it up to Archibald Young. Fibre blanket was also sent up with the coil, in order that the relocated assembly could be packed in the voids to cut down on metal ingress. Hugh McGurk, Foundry Manager at Archibald Young was extremely impressed with the turnaround of the coil: “The furnace going down was a potential major problem for us, but Coils & Cables reacted straight away when we made the call through to them. The job they have done for us is second to none, and they’ve gone out of their way to help us by providing the blanket too. We were up and running again in no time, and we will certainly be using them for any further work”.

Coils & Cables Demonstrate Again their Fast Response Coils & Cables have once more shown their commitment to minimising downtime by coming to the service of Finch Seaman Enfield Limited. The Essex ferrous and non-ferrous foundry contacted the West Bromwich based Coils & Cables team to report a damaged 50 kg Radyne pop-up furnace. Mindful of the issues of having a furnace out of action, Coils & Cables were in receipt of the coil and working on it the following morning. Where possible they will repair on site and around shift patterns, but in this case the job did not allow and so it was forwarded onto their expertly equipped works. The coil was immediately removed from the assembly whereupon a water leak was identified, repaired and then pressure and flow tested. The coil was re-insulated, put back into the assembly, new top and back insulation boards were added and the coil was re-screeded. The two power leads that supply the unit were also refurbished to Coils & Cables exceptional level of quality. The completed unit was palletised, shrink wrapped and ready for delivery, having taken just 2 full working days to turn around. Bill Kirby, Foundry Manager at Finch Seaman Enfield states “the speed at which Coils & Cables dealt with what could have been a real inconvenience for us was superb. They reacted quickly to fix our furnace, and the finished assembly along with the power cables are as good as new. I will certainly be using the team in the future”. December 2006 |

Coils & Cables to the Rescue (again!) Capital Refractories’ Coils & Cables division have yet again demonstrated their dedication to reducing furnace downtime at a North West investment foundry. The foundry experienced a coil failure – a typical situation for Coils & Cables. The West Bromich based division attended the site that same day, extracted the coil from the furnace body and removed the coil from site. Whilst Coils & Cables will always attempt to undertake work in-situ, the coil was so badly damaged that it was impossible to repair without returning it to the fully-equipped workshop. With time pressing on, the experts at Coils & Cables stripped the coil down, repaired, rewound and reinsulated the coil. After pressure testing, it was returned back up North and refitted. It took Coils & Cables less than a week from the actual breakdown to powering up the coil once more. As the Foundry Manager commented; “the speed at which Coils & Cables reacted to our breakdown is exceptional. They have saved us a huge amount in costs by limiting our downtime to the absolute minimum, and have worked extremely hard to provide us with a now perfect coil which means we can continue with production. I shall certainly make them my first and only call for coil and cable repairs in the future”. April 2006. |
Capital Coils & Cables – far more than just Coils and Cables The first quarter of 2006 has brought Coils & Cables numerous challenges. As always, foundries started the new year with the usual cooling system problems associated with the cold weather – something which Coils & Cables see every year and had warned their regular customers of. Frozen systems are commonplace during the Christmas break and are something that Coils & Cables can advise about. This period also saw radiator repairs which as always were undertaken onsite by Coils & Cables in their usual reassuringly quick fashion. Other work undertaken by Coils & Cables in the first quarter includes replacing manifolds, sight glasses and the valves within generator cabinets. The team have also moved furnace body insulations, installed busbars and manufactured furnace blocks. Their work has taken them from their base in the West Midlands to across the UK and even over to Europe. The second quarter is expected to bring yet more challenges for the team which is going from strength to strength with the recent appointment of another expert in the form of Pete Taylor. Coils & Cables currently offers a superlative service to a small group of extremely loyal customers. Nigel Robson, Capital’s Director of Sales says “With Capital Refractories’ investment and support we are looking forward to offering C&C’s excellent service to a wider customer base. Capital believes that there is a strong requirement from the foundry industry for better electrical engineering services in terms of responsiveness and quality; after all, unscheduled furnace downtime is at best an inconvenience and at worst extremely costly." C&C’s prime objective is to get your furnace operational in situ thereby saving you money and time. Its priority will always be to keep furnace downtime to an absolute minimum. Paul Cordelle, Senior Mechanical Engineer says “Customers can be assured that removal of the coil from site will always be a last resort”. C&C use only the highest quality materials. For example – C&C uses the best quality cable hose available which may cost a little more than others but experience shows that it lasts significantly longer. We all know the foundry is dependent on the efficient and continuing running of the furnace – simply put, production stops without it; C&C is confident that customers can be certain that the performance and reliability of their equipment will not be jeopardised by repair with inferior materials. C&C is dedicated to building and maintaining customer relationships and, says Paul Porter, Senior Electrical Engineer, “At C&C we have a sense of duty to our customers to get them up and running as fast as possible in any circumstances – and cost effectively”.
